Palestinian Culture Celebrated In West Orange On 'Day Of Solidarity'

WEST ORANGE, NJ — A group of West Orange residents recently gathered at Town Hall to celebrate Palestinian culture as part of the United Nations’ (UN) long-running “international day of solidarity.”
Spearheaded by residents of Palestinian origin and their supporters, the local event in West Orange on Nov. 29 was a nod to the “resistance and strength” of the Palestinian people, organizers said.
It was also a chance to “show how communities can come together in peace to honor heritage and foster understanding across cultural divides,” organizers added.

The event featured an array of activities that captured the richness of Palestinian culture, organizers said:
“From the savory aroma of traditional Palestinian food to the intricate beauty of ‘Tatreez,’ the art of Palestinian embroidery, attendees were immersed in the traditions that define Palestinian identity. Children enjoyed storytime sessions featuring Palestinian folktales, while poetry recitals brought to life the resilience and hope embedded in the Palestinian experience. There was a solidarity table featuring books on Palestinian history, art, novels and children's books. The program’s solemnity gave way to joyful moments, especially during a Dabke performance—a traditional Palestinian dance—where local performers invited the audience to join in and learn the spirited steps.”
The United Nations’ international day of solidarity for Palestine has been taking place since 1977, when the General Assembly called for an annual observance on Nov. 29. On that day in 1947, the assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine (resolution 181 (II)).
