Phone Scammer Poses As West Orange Police; Cops Warn Residents
"The WOPD would never call asking for this information," police said. "No need to report it if it happens – just hang up."
WEST ORANGE, NJ — “Don't give away your personal information.” This was the message from the West Orange Police Department on Tuesday in the wake of a telephone scam in the township.
Authorities are warning residents about a scam involving someone posing as the local police department, where the scammers try to get personal info from their victims.
“The WOPD would never call asking for this information,” police said. “No need to report it if it happens – just hang up.”

Anyone with questions can reach out to the West Orange Police Department’s non-emergency number at 973-325-4000, authorities said.
Police in West Orange aren’t the only local department to recently report a scam where the suspect impersonated law enforcement. In January, several Nutley residents were contacted by a police impersonator via telephone as part of a “spoofing” scheme, where a caller disguises their real phone number or imitates another legitimate one to fool their victim.
