Police Blotter: Assault, Theft, Shoplifting

A UPS package was allegedly stolen from a home on Woodside Terrace Feb. 17, police said. According to the incident report, dietary supplements valued at $160 were in the box.

A student at Liberty Middle School suffered a minor back injury after two other students allegedly assaulted her, police said. According to the incident report, two students approached the victim, pulled her hair and forced her to the ground last Thursday. The victim did not need any medical assistance, police said.

A Belleville woman was allegedly assaulted while inside Club 4Sixty6 in West Orange, police said. The woman, 30, sustained minor cuts to her chin and right temple area Saturday, according to the report. Security guards inside the club were able to provide descriptions of three suspects, all women.

More than $100 worth of newspapers were stolen outside Krauszers on Valley Road last Thursday, police said. Darryl Edwards of Irvington was arrested and charged with theft, authorities said. Edwards, 44, also had an outstanding warrant in Caldwell, according to the police report.

A West Orange man was arrested and charged with shoplifting after he was caught stealing from KMart, police said. Nicholas Gittens, 19, stole several items from the store, all worth roughly $25, officials said. They said he was hiding the merchandise inside the sleeves of his jacket and ripping off security tags.

Four suspects allegedly stole clothing from Macy's in Essex Green Plaza last Friday, police said. According to the incident report, one of the suspects distracted employees while three others stuffed clothing into a Macy's bag. As the fled, one of the suspects dropped a plastic bag containing five Polo sweatshirts valued at $95 each, police said. They then fled in a black-colored Mercedes and headed east of Route 280, authorities confirmed. The shoplifting incident was captured on the store's surveillance cameras, police said. Descriptions for two of the suspects were provided by police. One is described as a dark-skinned man, 5'8 tall with a thin build, between 35 and 40 years old, wearing a black puffy jacket, blue jeans and white sneakers. The other is described as a dark-skinned woman, between 35 and 40 years old, wearing a long black puffy coat.

A 15-year-old high school student was allegedly assaulted in school, police said. According to the police report, an unidentified student approached the 15 year old, put him in a choke hold and punched him. Authorities said the student struck his head when he fell to the ground and was taken to St. Barnabas Medical Center. The student did not lose consciousness when injured last Thursday afternoon, police said. The incident remains under investigation and police are reviewing surveillance cameras to identify to the other student.
