Saturday Morning Fire Displaces One Resident

No injuries reported

An early morning two-alarm residential fire at 35 Ferris Drive displaced one West Orange resident Saturday, said Greg Fennell, the township's deputy fire chief.

"The resident was awakened by the alarm because of a fire in the attic," he said. "Engine 4 on Pleasant Valley Way was first arriving and Captain Michael Merwin and his crew went through a crawl space to the attic to extinguish the fire."

Fennell said a preliminary investigation into the 1:15 a.m. fire at the single-family home indicates it likely was electrical in nature.

"It's still undetermined and we're waiting for the insurance company," he said.

An elderly female was the only resident in the house at the time of the fire, said Fennell. He said she escaped unscathed and no other injuries or fatalities were reported.

Fennell said mutual aid was called in through a county-wide system to cover the fire station.
