Seton Hall Prep's Valedictorian Heads to Harvard

Student James McGlone was highly involved in extracurricular activities

James McGlone, this year's valedictorian of Seton Hall Preparatory School, will be continuing his studies at Harvard University in the fall.

Throughout high school, McGlone's hard work and subsequent outstanding academic record led him to become the Class of 2011 valedictorian. At school, he was part of the Seton Scholars program, and said his favorite class was AP English, because of his "unbelievable teacher."

"Being valedictorian is definitely a huge honor, and I'm really happy and proud to get it," said McGlone. "It's not something I was really focused on — I was just focused on doing well and getting good grades, and this came along with it."

In addition to academia, McGlone was also highly involved in extracurricular activities. He was the captain of the mock trial team, a four-year member of the academic team, a student ambassador, and a member of the National Honor Society. He also ran cross-country for three years, and has played the bagpipe with the Essex Shillelagh Pipes and Drums since 2003.

"It's hard to say, but maybe academic team," said McGlone. "I learned a lot from (these activities) and I loved all the classmates I got to do them with," he said.

In the fall, McGlone will attend Harvard University. When he received his letter of acceptance, he was, "really excited to get in, and definitely a little bit surprised too."

"Harvard is an unbelievable package between the academics, location, campus and extracurricular programs they have going on – it's going to be all around incredible," said McGlone.

Although McGlone is excited for school, he admits that he will "miss (his) classmates, and lots of really close friends."

At school, McGlone hopes to study government or economics. Although he's not sure what he wants to do upon graduation, he thinks that "law school or a law career" might be a possibility.

Regardless of what career path he chooses, McGlone's many accomplishments from high school are bound to help him find success in college and in his future endeavors.
