Shelter In The Oranges Protects LGBTQ Teens During Coronavirus

Garden State Equality did a supermarket run for New Jersey's only LGBTQ youth homeless shelter. Here's how YOU can lend a hand.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A homeless shelter in the Oranges is providing a much-needed respite for New Jersey’s LGBTQ youth during the coronavirus crisis.

The need to provide a safe space for homeless youth going through a tough patch of their lives was always urgent at the Essex County LGBT Reaching Adolescents In Need Foundation (RAIN). But as COVID-19 continues to spread throughout New Jersey, that need has been amplified at the East Orange-based nonprofit.

Earlier this week, the RAIN Foundation gave an update on its residents, who are grateful they have a shelter to shelter in place. But the virus hasn’t stopped the need for compassion: recent additions to their clientele included two youths who were kicked out of their homes in the midst of the outbreak.

Recently, the RAIN Foundation got a boost from Garden State Equality (GSE), which went on a supermarket run to keep their pantry stocked with food and supplies. So far, GSE has raised about $4,200 and $1,000 in groceries for the foundation during the crisis.
