‘Stop For Nikhil’ In West Orange: Traffic Safety Event Back For 2022

The Nikhil Badlani Foundation will host the 12th annual "STOP For Nikhil" walk/run/bike event on Sept. 18.

WEST ORANGE, NJ — An annual traffic safety event that honors the memory of a late, 11-year-old student is returning to West Orange for 2022.

The Nikhil Badlani Foundation will host the 12th annual “STOP For Nikhil” walk/run/bike event on Sunday, Sept. 18. The event is organized in the name of Nikhil Badlani, who was killed in a 2011 motor vehicle accident involving a driver who ran a stop sign on the South Orange/Maplewood border near South Mountain Reservation.

Despite the tragedy of his passing, Badlani’s parents have kept his memory alive, partly through the annual Stop For Nikhil event. Read More: West Orange Parents Mourn Son, 10 Years After Tragic Death

According to organizers of this year’s event:

“2021 will go down in history as one of the worst years for traffic deaths in 2007. Seven-hundred and four people died on NJ roadways. This is a 20% increase in deaths over 2020. 246 of those are our state's most vulnerable road users - cyclists, and pedestrians. The event is especially significant on the heels of the National Roadway Safety Strategy that was released earlier this year by USDOT setting a first-ever national goal of zero roadway fatalities and committing to specific actions to advance the goal of safe mobility for all people.”

This year’s event will take place at 8 a.m. starting at West Orange High School Suriano Stadium, 51 Conforti Avenue. Hundreds of bicycle riders, walkers and runners are expected to participate in several different age categories. Online registration closes at midnight on Friday, Sept. 16. Same-day registration will open at 7:30 a.m. Register or donate at http://stopfornikhil.org.
