Arson investigators comb scene, two officials taken to hospital

A suspicious fire broke out in two buildings on Mitchell Street in West Orange leaving a firefighter and one police officer with smoke inhalation injuries.

Both officials were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital.

Officials said the Friday night fire on 85 and 87 Mitchell Street was deemed suspicious and was being investigated for arson.

The residents were evacuated but the buildings were deemed uninhabitable due to electrical problems, police said.

Fire officials said the blaze likely began in the front porch area. The fire remains under investigation.

The Orange Fire Department provided assistance.
