It seems like there is a special day for just about everything, so why shouldn't the classic doughnut get its own day, too? 

National Donut Day today, June 1, and in honor of the big day, many doughnut shops across the nation will hand out free doughnuts.

With three locations in West Orange, Dunkin' Donuts is on board with the holiday. For a free doughnut, you'll need to purchase a beverage, according to its "Behind the Beans" blog. You may want to do this in the morning, because Dunkin' Donuts will hand out one free donut of your choice "while supplies last." But this leads to a more important 

If you are in New York City and happen to spot a , which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, stop in for an even sweeter deal: Just show up and ask for one free doughnut of your choice, no purchase necessary. 

The national day itself, always celebrated on the first Friday of June each year, was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

The Salvation Army this year is teaming up with baking company Entenmann's to help celebrate National Donut Day. Entenmann's will donate proceeds from sales and offer customers a chance to win free doughnuts for a year, by entering a contest on its Facebook page. Entenmann's doughnuts can be found at area grocery stores.
