Tesla Will Open 2 Supercharger Stations In Essex County

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Electric car maker Tesla has plans to open two supercharger stations in Essex County, according to the company.

The exact location and timing of the openings haven’t been announced yet, but the company expects to open stations in Newark and West Orange.

There are 1,191 charging locations across the county, with an average of eight charging ports at each location. They're designed to charge a car quickly while the driver is on a long trip, and tend to be placed in areas like grocery stores, malls, and downtown areas, Tesla says on their website.

Tesla cars do not have gas tanks, and run totally on electric energy. They can go between 200-300 miles on a single full charge, the Washington Post reported.

Overall, New Jersey residents are apparently warming up to the concept of owning an electric vehicle, according to a recent study.

The sale of electric vehicles is blooming in the Garden State, with registration of model year 2016 plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) up 79 percent from 2015, according to a recent analysis by ChargEVC, an industry advocacy nonprofit group.

New Jersey now has over 10,000 PEVs on the road, 60 percent of which have been sold in the last two years, the study claims.
