Unbeaten West Orange Rolls Past Ranney Prep 6-0

Mountaineers ready for Wednesday showdown with Seton Hall Prep

Wednesday afternoon's showdown with cross-township rival Seton Hall Prep will be dramatically different than what the West Orange soccer team faced Monday.

The Mountaineers routed Ranney Prep 6-0 to improve to 3-0 as junior Jelanie Williams scored two quick goals. He's got five goals in three games. Senior Fabricio Acosta had four assists and sophomore Kazari Trought added two goals. Junior Matt Schneier and junior Brian Marsh had the other goals.

Senior keeper Thomas Attamante and junior keeper Mike Lawlor split halves as head coach Doug Nevins gave subs plenty of playing times.

"We're still a little banged up; we have a couple of guys injured, so we rested probably three guys,'' Nevins said. "We don't want to risk them for Wednesday. The most important thing (today) is the first 15 or 20 minutes I just wanted to see the guys get a he rhythm and play the right way and they did. We scored immediately. We moved the ball well; the most important thing was that Kazari got his confidence back. You might want to call it a slump – two games without a goal for him is a slump for him.''

The Mountaineers allowed just one goal in three games.

"I said if you're going to score we need to score by getting it wide and crossing, we're not great in that, I don't want to embarrass anybody by just possessing and not trying to score," Nevins said. "The only way we could score is let's get it wide, let them press and cross it. We had our chances, we didn't score, but our guys played well. A lot of guys got touches.''

"Today was basically about our formations and how we connect passes – things like that,'' said Attamante. "We knew what kind of game it would be.''

They expect a tense game Wednesday against Nevins' alma mater. Nevins said that Seton Hall Prep is one of the best teams in the country.

"I always want to do well against them, but it's important not so much because they are number two in the country,'' Nevins said. "But in terms of our league and county and everything else — state recognition. If we win that game, maybe (we get) national recognition. It'll be a chance for the kids to see how they stack up against one of the best teams in the state and country.''

Game time at West Orange High School Wednesday is 4 p.m.
