Weird-Tasting Water In West Orange (Here's What Is Causing It)

WEST ORANGE, NJ — Did you something weird about your drinking water in West Orange this week? It’s not your imagination, officials say.

According to an alert sent from New Jersey American Water on Tuesday, customers in West Orange may temporarily notice an “earthy, musty taste” or odor to their drinking water.

An algae bloom at a source reservoir has been attributed as the cause, the utility said.

“The water is being treated at the source to help remove the two non-toxic compounds that cause the taste and odor,” the notice continued. “Customers should notice an improvement over the next week. The water in question meets Federal Safe Drinking Water Act standards. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
