West Orange Athlete Caps High School Career With All Star Experience
Former West Orange star receiver experiences North-South game
West Orange High School's recently-graduated senior Josh McNeil was among 88 of the state's best football players Monday night as the North met the South in the 33rd Investors Saving Bank North-South All Star Football Classic at Kean University.
McNeil, a defensive back, was hoping to play his final high school game, and go out with a win. But the South escaped with a 21-14 win, sealing the victory with Hammonton's Jared Sanchez' 85-yard interception return for touchdown with 1:11 left in the game.
McNeil, who led West Orange with 47 tackles, and three interceptions last year, said he savored the chance of playing defense for the last tine. He will play offense for Northern Michigan University. He leaves for Michigan Aug. 5 with camp starting four days later.

"I really want to have fun," said McNeil before last night's game. "Especially playing defense for the last time. I’m hoping I can win the MVP."
"It was great," said McNeil of the all-star experience. "I'm playing with kids I’ve played against the last few years. It’s great."

McNeil said he enjoyed working against five receivers who he called "amazing."
"The talent here is just amazing," he said. "All of those guys can beat you deep. I’m really ready to challenge myself."
McNeil was one of the best receivers in Essex County last fall. He caught 35 passes for 754 yards and seven touchdowns. McNeil also ran track this spring for the first time and turned in a productive season.
"I think the toughest thing coming over from track was getting used to my helmet; I really think this was the only difference," he said.
As for what he will be doing until he leaves for Michigan, McNeil said: "Work hard and focus on staying in shape for camp."
