Here’s what the West Orange Human Relations Commission had to say as this year’s celebration reaches its finale:

“For the first time in the history of New Jersey, Muslim Heritage Month is celebrated in January. It is a dedicated period to honor and recognize the profound contributions of Muslims throughout history, and provides a valuable opportunity to explore the diverse cultural, scientific, and artistic achievements of the Muslim community. Notably, achievements in astronomy, mathematics, and medicine laid the foundation for contemporary scientific methods. Art and architecture flourished, with monuments like the Alhambra and the Taj Mahal reflecting the rich aesthetic heritage of Muslim civilizations. Islamic literature, including the works of poets like Rumi and Hafez, continues to resonate globally. Muslim Heritage Month also serves as an opportunity to dispel stereotypes and promote understanding, recognizing the diverse backgrounds of Muslims and their ongoing contributions in fields such as science, technology, medicine, arts, and social sciences. The celebration extends to honoring American Muslims, acknowledging their integral role in shaping the cultural mosaic of the United States and contributing to the nation's progress.”

“By commemorating this month, we not only acknowledge the historical and contemporary impact of Islam but also foster inclusivity, respect and cultural awareness for a world where diversity is cherished,” the group emphasized.
