West Orange Father, Sons Team Up and Write Sports Book: Rising Above

West Orange's Gregory Zuckerman paired with his teenage sons to research and write a book about the inspirational power of sports.

West Orange, NJ – West Orange’s Gregory Zuckerman is like any other father and sports fan in Essex County.

He and his sons enjoy the Yankees in the summer, root for the Giants in the fall and “reminisce about Linsanity in the winter.”

But Zuckerman and his two teen sons, Elijah and Gabriel, have a unique claim to fame… they’ve collaborated on a potentially bestselling book.

According to Zuckerman, “Rising Above” (Penguin Random House) is more than a sports book, it’s an affirmation that the power of athletics can bridge gaps that include Tourette Syndrome, poverty, disability and racism.

During his research for the book, Zuckerman – a special writer at The Wall Street Journal and a bestselling author – teamed with his sons to collect obscure stories and conduct interviews of high-profile sports stars such as Tim Howard, Stephen Curry, Dwyane Wade, Jim Abbott and Althea Gibson.

The result is a tapestry that tells the stories of some of the world’s most famous athletes and the overwhelming obstacles they overcame, Zuckerman said.
