West Orange Firefighters Earn Big Promotions, Both ‘Deeply Connected’ To Town

Mayor Susan McCartney presided over a swearing in ceremony for two West Orange Fire Department promotions at Town Hall on Feb. 24. West Orange Fire Chief Anthony Vecchio made brief remarks and offered high praise as he introduced the promotees.

Captain Gary Braus Jr. was elevated to the rank of deputy fire chief, and firefighter Brendan Curry was promoted to the rank of fire captain. Town Hall was packed with family, friends, and supporters as a ceremonial honor guard led by a bagpiper posted the colors for the Pledge of Alliance. Family members each held the Bible as Mayor McCartney administered the oath of office while both men were swore in.

Deputy Fire Chief Braus started with the West Orange Fire Department in 2014 and Captain Curry in 2017. Both are graduates of West Orange High School and are deeply connected to the community. Captain Curry ‘s father was a West Orange fireman, as were two of his uncles.

The commitment of a firefighter extends beyond the call of duty because they continually train, educate, and innovate to enhance their capabilities in protecting the West Orange community. All the brave men and women of the West Orange Fire Department serve as the first line of defense against the ever-present danger of fires. Their sacrifices often go unnoticed, but their impact resonates far and wide each day as they keep us safe.
