West Orange High School Student On His Way To Pilot’s License

A West Orange HS sophomore earned a prestigious worldwide award that will put him on a path to a private pilot's license.

WEST ORANGE, NJ — A West Orange High School sophomore recently earned a prestigious worldwide award, which will put him on a path to a private pilot’s license.

According to the West Orange Public School District, Second Year AFJROTC Cadet/Captain Antoine Chapman has been awarded the AFJROTC Chief of Staff Flight Academy Private Pilot Scholarship.

The scholarship is only offered to 150 cadets worldwide each year, school officials said.

"This means that this summer, [Chapman] will attend one of 11 participating universities for eight weeks, all-expenses paid," said WOHS AFJROTC instructor Maj. Joseph Marchesini (Ret.).

Following completion of the course, Chapman will earn a private pilot's license. The estimated value of the scholarship is $20,000, Marchesini said.

There is no military commitment associated with the scholarship, an Air Force initiative for well-qualified AFJROTC cadets only, school officials said.
