West Orange High School Student’s Research Earns Spot At MIT

West Orange High School senior Robeson Bennett has made history, breaking new ground as a scholar, athlete, and leader in his school community. Robeson, with a stellar GPA of 4.54, has been selected to present his groundbreaking research at the 2024 MIT IEEE Undergraduate Research Technology Conference (URTC), an honor reserved for top-tier students worldwide. His research, initially conducted during the Governor’s School of Engineering and Technology, represents a culmination of years of academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to service.
As West Orange High School’s first Black scholar selected to attend the prestigious Governor’s School, Robeson’s journey serves as an inspiration for students across the district. His research, developed in collaboration with NASA, not only earned a coveted spot at MIT’s conference but will also be published—further affirming his impact in the field of engineering and technology.

In recognition of his incredible accomplishments, Robeson was recently honored at a West Orange Board of Education meeting, where his pioneering achievements were celebrated by school officials and the community. This honor reflects the district's pride in his contributions and sets him apart as a trailblazer in both academics and leadership.
Robeson's influence, however, extends beyond his individual accomplishments. He has made it his mission to open doors for others in the West Orange Public School community. After attending Cornell’s Catalyst Academy in the summer of 2023, Robeson founded West Orange High School’s National Society of Black Engineers Jr. (NSBE Jr.) chapter, ensuring that more students have access to STEM opportunities. Under his leadership, the chapter has gained the attention of Rutgers University’s Dean of Engineering, who has invited them to affiliate with Rutgers’ esteemed School of Engineering. Robeson also coordinated speakers from NASA and Rutgers to speak to his peers, underscoring his commitment to uplifting others while trailblazing his own path.

In addition to his academic accolades, Robeson is an athlete and a musician. He is a varsity player in two sports and has been an active member of the school’s Wind Ensemble for three years, showcasing his well-rounded talents. His leadership within and beyond the classroom has earned him membership in six honor societies, further highlighting his dedication to both academic and extracurricular pursuits.
Robeson’s success is a testament to the opportunities available within the West Orange Public School District, which has nurtured his passion for STEM and supported his intellectual curiosity. His educational journey has been enriched by participation in summer programs at institutions like Tulane, Wake Forest, and Brown, which have allowed him to further hone his skills in preparation for future endeavors.
Reflecting on his journey, Robeson credits the early influence of Roosevelt Middle School’s "Role Models for Manhood" program, which helped him secure a place at the prestigious WEB DuBois Scholars Summer Program and set him on a path to success.
As Robeson prepares for the next stage of his academic journey, his accomplishments and leadership in the West Orange community will serve as an enduring legacy, inspiring future generations of students to pursue their own dreams with the same tenacity and commitment to excellence.
