WEST ORANGE, NJ — West Orange is hiring for part-time, seasonal school crossing guards, and eligible local residents have first dibs if they’re interested, authorities say.
According to the municipal website, the hourly pay rate is based on experience and runs from $13 to $20.87. Work hours are 7 to 9 a.m., and 2 to 4 p.m. West Orange residents shall be considered for open positions first, the job posting states.

- Individual must provide for the safety of students and members of the public, enforce crosswalk functions and procedures, and maintain student management at crosswalks within the Township and around school properties.
- Individual must have the ability to enter traffic lanes to direct children and drivers; stand for undetermined amounts of time, walk and reach with hands and arms.
- Individual must also have the visual ability to sufficiently and accurately record license plate numbers of traffic violators.
- Individual is required to work 100% outside in all types of weather and will be constantly exposed to dirt, dust, and exhaust fumes.
Applicants are required to submit to a full background check and medical exam. If hired, medical exams are required to be submitted to the township on an annual basis, the posting states.

- Direct, monitor, and assist students and members of the public crossing at designated streets and crosswalks.
- Alert motorists to the presence of students and members of the public by displaying appropriate signs to stop traffic before crossing students and members of the public.
- Wear and display department assigned reflective clothing while performing crossing guard duties.
- Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals and report infractions to supervisors.
- Interact professionally and appropriately with children and other members of the general public.
- Observe traffic flows to safely enter the street in order to direct traffic.
