West Orange HS Students Speak For Peers As School Board Liaisons

West Orange High School seniors Nina Davis and Abby Rothstein made their first appearance as the 2024-2025 liaisons at the Board of Education meeting, held Sept. 16 in the Library Media Center. The high school liaisons attend board meetings, present reports, and act as advocates for students in the school district.

"The West Orange Board of Education and I are so proud of Nina and Abby," noted Superintendent Hayden Moore. "We look forward to the wonderful things they will contribute at our meetings as they bring the voices of our students to our board meetings."

"Over the past three years, I heard my peers at WOHS school speak about a multitude of issues going on. But when I questioned what exactly we should do to fix problems, I was met with confusion as no one really knew. When I learned about the student liaison position, I thought it would be a perfect avenue to address student issues and bring about change," she began.

Nina is currently active in several clubs and outreaches:

  • Public Relations manager for the Unity Club
  • Photographer and broadcaster for West Orange Sports Media Association
  • Member of Black Student Union, Civic Leaders of America, and Mock Trial
  • Member of Rho Kappa (Social Studies) Honor Society
  • Media Coordinator for the local chapter of Jack and Jill of America
  • Intern for Newark Emergency Services for For Families

Nina is interested in studying Communications or Broadcast Journalism.

"Currently, I wish to study Communications or Broadcast Journalism in hopes of one day working for a major broadcast company. Some colleges I'm interested in include Syracuse, Seton Hall, and Boston College," she added.

"I am deeply honored to have been selected for this role and am excited to serve my student body to the best of my ability," Davis concluded.

Abigail Rothstein

"I wanted to become a BOE liaison because I want to be able to make a difference in our schools and community. I also believe that this opportunity WOHS provides is incredibly valuable and important, so I couldn't imagine not trying to live up to it," she said.

Abby is active in sports, honor societies, and clubs at the high school:

  • Three-year captain of the varsity Girls Volleyball team
  • Newly-appointed president of the Thespian Honor Society (also served as Historian and Treasurer)
  • Former secretary and current vice-president of Glee Club
  • Co-founder and vice-president of the Plant Club
  • Treasurer of the Italian Honor society and member of the Italian Club
  • Has performed in all WOHS musicals since ninth grade
  • Member of the National Honor Society
  • Drama Club member

"I would like to major in Social Work and then get certified to be a Child Life Specialist in the Oncology Department once I have gotten my Masters," Abby stated.

"I love West Orange High School and feel incredibly honored to represent my student body," she concluded.
