West Orange Library Expected To Get Big Boost From State Funds

WEST ORANGE, NJ — In the age of smartphones, tablets and access to unlimited information at the touch of a button, libraries have gone way beyond “just books.” And that’s part of the reason why public libraries in West Orange and Maplewood are expected to get $11.3 million in combined state funding, officials say.

On Friday, state Assembly members Mila Jasey and John McKeon said that West Orange is expected to get $3 million and Maplewood will get $8.3 million for their respective libraries through the Library Construction Bond Act.

The Legislature must approve the appropriations for the bond awards.

Jasey and McKeon represent District 27, which includes both West Orange and Maplewood.

According to Jasey and McKeon:

“In the age of smartphones, tablets and access to unlimited information at the touch of a button, libraries have become about so much more than just books. Libraries are community spaces, offering a variety of family programs, enrichment classes and access to high speed internet. During the pandemic, local libraries in Essex and Morris counties have expanded their reach to offer curbside service, home delivery for seniors and Zoom presentations. Their role in their communities has never been more important.”

“Sadly, library funding has remained flat in recent years, leaving many with little resources to make improvements,” the pair of lawmakers said in a joint statement. “This support from the Library Construction Bond Act will help libraries in Maplewood and West Orange continue growing and innovating.”
