West Orange Man Charged With Attempted Murder: Prosecutor
A West Orange man was charged with attempted murder in connection with a fatal shooting that took place in North Jersey.
WEST ORANGE, NJ — A West Orange man was arrested and charged with attempted murder in connection with a 2021 fatal shooting that took place in Jersey City, authorities announced Tuesday.
Damean Bates, 33, of West Orange, was arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina on March 22, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Bates was charged with attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He remains in custody in North Carolina and is awaiting extradition to New Jersey, prosecutors said.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service Eastern District of North Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force made the arrest after members of the U.S. Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force learned of Bates’ location.
A second suspect in the shooting, Anthony King, 35, of Jersey City, was arrested on Jan. 13. King was charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He is currently detained at the Hudson County Correctional Facility, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors released the following statement about the shooting:
“On Nov. 13, 2021, shortly after 4 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department responded to the area of Grant Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive after hearing gunshots. Responding officers found a male victim with a gunshot wound to the torso. The victim, later identified as Ishamell McCany, 41, of Jersey City, was transported by emergency medical services to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 4:20 a.m.”
