West Orange School Board Swears In Newest Member, Chooses President

WEST ORANGE, NJ — The West Orange Board of Education held their annual reorganization meeting on Thursday at West Orange High School, swearing in Maria Vera as the newest board member and reappointing Brian Rock as president for another year.

Vera – who recently defeated incumbent Melinda Huerta for a spot on the board – earned the board’s nod for its vice president seat.

Vera, a long-time educator and guidance counselor in the Orange School District, was elected to the board in November with 3,735 votes. She will serve a three-year term. Read More: West Orange School Board Election Results Certified (See Final Tallies)

Also on the agenda were the annual designation of positions for various functions throughout the district and dates for the 2024 board meetings, though a few will require modifications, district administrators said.

The next board meeting will be held Jan. 22 in the Library Media Center at West Orange High School, with a public session beginning at 6:30 p.m.
