West Orange Students Safe After Smoke Wafts From Classroom Vent

Authorities temporarily evacuated a West Orange elementary school after a univent in a classroom began smoking, school officials said.

WEST ORANGE, NJ — Authorities temporarily evacuated a West Orange elementary school on Monday after a univent in a classroom began smoking, school officials said.

The incident took place around 11 a.m. at Kelly Elementary School. All students and staff are safe, West Orange district administrators said Monday.

“The police have evacuated the students and staff to the high school auditorium,” school officials said. “The fire department is evaluating the univent in the classroom. Please do not go to the high school as all students are safe.”

School officials provided the following update a few hours later:

“Kelly Elementary School students and staff returned to school at 12:10 p.m. All students had a 45-minute lunch and recess period. Students and staff are all safe and normal activities have resumed.”
