West Orange Takes Center Stage at Lincoln Center

All eyes were on the West Orange High School Orchestra last month when the group performed on the stage of Lincoln Center in New York.

The performance took place Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall.

Orchestra director Dr. Elena Peres, who has been in the district for seven years and at the high school for four, said 70 students performed a selection of classical and contemporary pieces.

The selection included Symphony No. 14 in A major K. 114, Allegro Moderato by Mozart, Ave Verum Corpus K. 618, also by Mozart, and Suite for String Orchestra: Folk Tune and Fiddle Dance by the British composer Percy Fletcher.

This wasn't the first time the group graces the stage at Lincoln Center.

The orchestra was part of a closed competitions with several other youth orchestras last April at Avery Fisher Hall.

The orchestra worked with Manhattan Concert Productions that invited the students to perform last year and this year.

West Orange was one of three groups to perform that evening. 

Other groups that performed that night included Schola Cantorum on Hudson under the baton of Dr. Deborah King, and the Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra with conductor Dr. Gerard Floriano.
