West Orange Teacher Creates ‘Dr. Seuss Gym Class’ (PHOTOS)
The unique physical education class used "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" to sharpen young students' motor skills.

WEST ORANGE, NJ — We’ll spare you a lame, Dr. Seuss-themed opening pun to leave more space for some smile-inducing photos.
Last month, kindergarten and 1st grade students at Gregory Elementary School in West Orange took part in a unique gym class courtesy of the creative brain of physical education teacher Lisa Asman.
According to school administrators, Asman wanted to complement her young students’ English Language Arts activities by celebrating the beloved author Dr. Seuss and Read Across Activities at Gregory School.

As part of the March 22 class, Asman read the Seuss classic “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.” When she finished reading, Asman directed the students in an activity that tested their coordination, balance, fine motor skills and the ability to follow direction. Students formed lines and had to toss large fishes to each other. When the fish reached the end of the line, a student would take a small plastic fish and bring it to the front of the line along with the fish, and the students would change places.
“Lisa is one of our strongest physical education teachers,” Supervisor of Physical Education and Health for K-12 Kevin Alvine said. “She’s always developing clever physical education programs to complement the curriculum.”
