Carballo Blazes Trail As West Orange's First Female Town Engineer
It's been more than a century since West Orange created an engineering department. Now, a longstanding glass ceiling has been shattered.

WEST ORANGE, NJ — Another milestone has been reached in West Orange: its first-ever female town engineer.
Zayibeth Carballo was sworn in as the new municipal engineer and director of engineering at last week’s town council meeting, becoming the first woman to hold the position since West Orange created an engineering department in 1916.
Now – more than a century later – Carballo has broken through the glass ceiling.

Mayor Susan McCartney, who blazed a trail last year as the town’s first woman mayor, swore Carballo into service at the May 7 meeting. Watch the video below, cued to the ceremony.
