The yellow journalism and jingoism that the media continues to use to egg on continued war in Ukraine needs to stop. Who are they speaking for, their readership, or US foreign policy? It's also a simplistic telling of recent history that takes their readers for fools. Words such as “evil” or “insane” could be substituted for any imperialist-in-power, president or country.
How hypocritical that Putin’s name/Russia could easily be substituted for example by Biden/United States of America, when the NY Times Editorial Board writes: “It is in their name that their president is waging this terrible and useless war…their lives are being mortgaged for generations to come in a state distrusted and disliked in many parts of the world” (A Brutal New Phase of Putin's Terrible War in Ukraine, Jan 21, 2023). This is after the US announced on January 6th, 2023, that it plans to give an additional 3.75 billion more in military aid to Ukraine.
In the US, and around the world, people are paying more for heat and food. Kudos to all striking workers and activists around the world (search those terms for real news). More people would probably resist the war if they weren't distracted by making”ends meet”. And grappling with unprecedented mental health, opioid, and gun crises (which the violence of war only worsens). The shootings in America are “senseless” according to President Biden and other officials, but it is perfectly logical to pump our weapons into other countries.

When news is presented in this way, whose interest does it serve? The Mainstream media might as well be the mouthpieces of the US weapon and oil companies, and their stock-holding politicians. They are truly complicit in pulling the trigger. The justification of US involvement in Ukraine sounds just like calls to war in the past. It's up to us to call it out, as Ukraine becomes frighteningly similar to Vietnam, “destroy[ing]” it in order to “save it”.
