2010 School Report Card: Westwood Regional Students Score Better Than State Averages
District scores were sometimes worse when compared to similar demographics
According to the 2010 New Jersey School Report Card released by the state's Department of Education today, students in the Westwood Regional School District performed similarly on state tests to those in like districts, with a few exceptions.
Scores for grades 3-8 on the NJ ASK and for grade 11 on the HSPA were part of the district's report card. For nearly all of the tests, Westwood Regional students trended with District Factor Groups, which are similar in demographics, and state scores. For example, more third grade students taking the Language Arts NJ ASK test failed to score at a proficient level in 2010 than in 2009 locally, in the District Factor Groups and statewide.
The one exam when the trends did not match up was with the Grade 4 NJ ASK Mathematics exam. In the Westwood Regional School District, more students failed to get a proficient score in 2010 than in 2009. In the District Factor Groups (DFGs) and at the state level, fourth-graders did better on the math section of the test in 2010 than in 2009. Overall, a greater percentage of Westwood students passed the fourth grade math test than at the state level, but a smaller percentage passed than those in the DFGs.

Across the board, Westwood Regional students outperformed the statewide passing rates, but they didn't always do better than those in the DFGs. The district's students had lower passing rates than those in the DFGs in Grade 3 NJ ASK Language Arts and Math, Grade 4 NJ ASK Math, Grade 5 NJ ASK Language Arts, Grade 6 NJ ASK Language Arts, Grade 8 NJ ASK Math and Grade 11 HSPA Language Arts and Math.
The differences ranged from nearly identical rates to several percentage points. The largest discrepancy was in the Grade 3 NJ ASK Language Arts exam. Locally, 63.4 percent of students passed. Of the DFGs, 69 percent passed. At the state level, only 59.8 percent of students passed.

The Grade 3 Language Arts test yielded the lowest passing rates across the board in 2010.
The highest passing rates were on the HSPA Language Arts exam. A vast majority, 93.9 percent, of Westwood Regional students passed the test. In the DFGs, 94.1 percent of students passed and statewide, 88 percent passed.
Education officials in the Westwood Regional School District have plans in place to address issues and boost district scores on standardized tests.
