American Pharoah Driving Up Belmont Stakes Ticket Prices

Triple Crown contender causing tickets to sell for up to 300 percent more than normal.

American Pharoah is driving up ticket prices for the 147th Belmont Stakes.

According to information released by Rukkus, an online entertainment and sports ticket aggregation website, the potential of a Triple Crown is driving up ticket prices between 76 and 314 percent of what they would go for if there were no Triple Crown contender.

“What we’re seeing is that tickets on the secondary market are more expensive because the demand grows after a horse wins the first two faces,” said Rukkus’ Jake Sharpless. Everyone wants to say they saw the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.”

According to Rukkus, the average ticket in the best section sells for between $128 and $413 on the secondary market. With a Triple Crown winner in the mix, the price skyrockets to between $536 and $976.

The average grandstand general admission ticket sells for $20 in years with no Triple Crown contenders and nearly $36 when one races.

“The Belmont Stakes is a perfect example as we’ve seen lower prices in years without a potential Triple Crown winner,”Sharpless said. “As we get closer and outside factors come into play, everything could change.”

The horse, owned by Teaneck businessman Ahmed Zayat, is the overwhelming favorite to win the Triple Crown with 10-11 odds, according to SportsBook.ag.
