WESTWOOD, NJ — Michelle King-Hudson moved from Maryland to North Jersey 30 years ago, but she's been admiring the "mod" furniture of the 1950s and 1960s for longer than that. Now she's opened and decorated a unique furnishings store in Westwood, in Bergen County.

Her shop, King-Hudson, held its soft opening in mid-July.

"King-Hudson was conceived to celebrate the lasting appeal of and demand for rare, high-end, mid-century modern furniture and its quality aesthetic," King-Hudson said. "Our furniture is either newly discovered in mint condition or restored to like-new. You will not find replica pieces here – our inventory is vintage."

Besides vintage furniture, the spot offers restoration services and unique home accessories, she said.

King-Hudson is a long-time restoration expert and collector of rare mid-century furniture, lighting and decor.

"We are a great resource all-things mid-century modern furnishing, offering expertise for buyers and sellers, to any professional involved in design, the built space or investment advisement," she noted. "King-Hudson is so much more than a retail store."

The showroom features handmade and rare pieces, along with restoration, consignment and staging services for real estate, events, and productions.

The opening collection includes pieces by Mies Van de Rohe, Edward Wormly, Milo Baughman, John Hutton and Adrian Pearsall.

The inventory also includes vintage lighting by Robert Sonneman and Moss Lamps, as well as handmade and Amish quilts, original granny blankets, Murano and Venetian glass, Russel Wright ceramic platters and vintage pottery.

The shop also includes a subscription-based membership package with access to an onsite period design research library. The library includes mid-century modern art and design books and media, with topics such as art history, restoration how-tos, home and garden, and neo-craft. The business said it plans to host on-site art and design workshops.

When asked why she chose the location, King-Hudson said, "Northern New Jersey is an ideal market for us. Ultimately, we are a regional exclusive; there is nobody else offering ready-to-purchase and ready-to-use, original mid-century design pieces for their homes and spaces."

She added, "We also love the proximity to New York City. Downtown Westwood is a beautiful spot with a true 'main street' vibe. It's a perfect fit."

She noted, "The outpouring of positive feedback from the Westwood and Pascack Valley community has been amazing! We have had nothing but positive visitor feedback and are excited to welcome new clients into our fold."

King-Hudson is located at 37 Westwood Ave., Westwood.

Summer hours through August are Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 7 p.m., and walk-ins and appointments are welcome.
