WESTWOOD, NJ — A sinkhole closed a road near a school in Bergen County on Thursday, police said.
Police in Westwood said Thursday morning that the "large" sinkhole opened up in the middle of Harrington Avenue, near Berkeley School.
Police said they would close the road between Berkeley Avenue and Sand Road. They planned to place officers at the scene to help parents with drop-off and pickup on Thursday, they said.
Residents were encouraged to use other routes for travel.
Before 5 p.m., Rick Woods, the superintendent of the Department of Public Works, said a water leak had caused the sinkhole.
He said he expected the road to be open later in the day.
"We thank you for your understanding as we try to rectify this situation," police said.
