Authorities Probe Fatal Bergen Motor Vehicle Crash

A 69-year-old Park Ridge man was killed and a 64-year-old Montvale man was in critical condition after the crash Sunday, authorities said.

Authorities are continuing to investigate a weekend crash that killed a 69-year-old Park Ridge man and left a 64-year-old Montvale man in critical condition, said Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal.

The victims, Ioannis Kapantais, 69, and Maochia Hu, 64, were struck by a 2015 Volvo on a sidewalk at Diedtrich Lane and Park Avenue driven by a 61-year-old Park Ridge resident near Borough Hall just before 8 p.m. Sunday, Grewal said.

Kapantais later died at Hackensack University Medical Center; Maochia Hu was still at the hospital in critical condition Tuesday, the prosecutor said.

Detectives from the prosecutor's Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and the Park Ridge Police were investigating the case.
