Bergen County's American Pharoah Draws Crowd Of 30,000 To Churchhill Downs

Teaneck native's horse paraded around the track in first public appearance since winning the Triple Crown June 6.

About 30,000 descended upon Churchhill Downs in Lousivlle, Kentucky Saturday night to catch a glimpse of American Pharoah, the latest Triple Crown winner.

It was the colt’s first public appearance since winning the Triple Crown a week earlier, APP.com reported. The track was where the 3-year-old won the Kentucky Derby by a length in May.

“I’ve been on Cloud Nine since the Derby and that’s a very long time to be excited,” 0wner Ahmed Zayat, a Teaneck resident, told the website. “It’s really surreal.... Honestly, it’s all about the horse. It’s all about American Pharoah. He’s making everybody look unreal.”

There is still speculation that American Pharoah will race in the $1-million Haskell Invitational Aug. 2.

Track officials told the website that attendance may top out at 60,000; the attendance record is more than 53,600, which was set on Haskell Day in 2003, APP.com previously reported.
