'Big Lobi,' 22-Pound Lobster Bought By Westwood Man, Dies After Being Set Free: Report

David Schmidt of Westwood and his brother, Chris, purchased the lobster for $210 with the idea of setting it free.

WESTWOOD, N.J. — A 22-pound lobster a borough man and his brother purchased for $210 with the idea of keeping it from being killed, has died, according to a report.

A fisherman found the huge crustacean Thursday near where they released it, The Cape Cod Times reported Monday.

David Schmidt, of Westwood, and his brother, Chris, bought the lobster, which they named "Big Lobi" after Red Sox star David "Big Papi" Ortiz, at the Chatham Pier Fish Market.

A fisherman who found the lobster gave the body to Jenny Bovey, a local artist and owner of Blue Water Fish Rubbings. Bovey uses dead sea animals to make prints for clothing, will create a rubbing of the lobster and donated it to Best Buddies, a non-profit that helps children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, that will be auctioned off at a fundraiser.
