Randy Ciocco Named Washington Township Police Chief

Ciocco was sworn in as the Township of Washington's fifth police chief during the Oct. 18 council meeting.

Surrounded by family members, friends and supporters, Randy Ciocco was sworn in as the township's fifth police chief during the Oct. 18 council meeting. He was appointed as chief on Oct. 12.

Ciocco, who served as acting chief after William Cicchetti's retirement in May, has been a member of the township police department for 37 years. He worked his way up the ranks starting as a patrolman in 1973, moving to detective, detective sergeant, lieutenant and captain before being named acting chief and finally chief of police.

Ciocco thanked everyone in attendance for coming out to see him "on one of the most proud nights of my life." He said he was grateful to have his parents in attendance as well as his siblings, wife, daughter and grandson.

He also was appreciative of the members of law enforcement who came to show their support, both from his own department and others. He encouraged the younger members to "keep at it" as he has over the years.

"This is the greatest job in the world," he said. "You can come to work every single day and make a difference."

Sobkowicz said she thought Ciocco would make a very good chief of police.

"Chief Ciocco is an excellent communicator, encouraging more contact with the public and enhancing media relations," she said. "He is a hands-on leader, who is proactive in dealing with situations and sets an example for others."

Sobkowicz also pointed out that Ciocco understands the current economic climate and has agreed to forgo a pay increase for his promotion this year.

"We have no doubt that Randy will do a great job for the residents of the Township of Washington," she said.

Cicchetti, who is now police director, presented Ciocco with his former badge, which Ciocco will wear when he's on duty. Cicchetti said he was happy to pass along the badge to a colleague who he's known for 37 years.

"I feel he's the right choice for this position after consultation with the mayor and others in our deliberation. There were a lot of good candidates but we felt Randy was the man for the job at this point," Cicchetti said. "I want to congratulate him."
