Woodbridge Police Will Crack Down On Packs Of Teens On Bikes

Teenagers on bikes rode directly into oncoming traffic recently on Woodbridge Center Drive.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — At the Tuesday night Council meeting, Woodbridge Police Director Joe Nisky said the police department is aware of recent reports of teenagers riding bicycles recklessly in town.

That includes a recent incident on Woodbridge Center Drive where teenagers pedaling bikes rode directly into oncoming traffic.

The police director called such behavior "extremely dangerous," and he said Woodbridge Police will be out in force looking for this, especially now that the nice weather has arrived.

"This type of reckless behavior will not be tolerated," Nisky said. "Officers will be directed to issue summonses, and parental notifications (will be made) to address and deter this."

Also, all five middle schools in the Woodbridge school district agreed to host an assembly "very soon" so police can talk to teens and tweens about the dangers of reckless and aggressive bike riding, said Mayor John McCormac.

"It is mostly middle school-aged kids," said McCormac.

Packs of teenagers riding bikes recklessly has been a problem for years in New Jersey, especially in urban/suburban towns like Woodbridge. Once the nice weather hits, packs of teens ride bikes in the street, sometimes directly headed into traffic or doing wheelies and stunts.
