Avenel Man Shot to Death in Rahway

There are no arrests yet in the death of Donta Mickens, 21, who was shot several times early Sunday morning.

There are no arrests yet in the shooting death of a 21-year-old Avenel man who was killed in Rahway.

Donta Mickens was visiting friends on Waite St. around 2:30 am Sunday morning when he was shot and killed, according to the Union County Homicide Task Force. Rahway police are also investigating Mickens' death.

Mickens was a 2008 graduate of John P. Stevens High School in Edison, and he attended Middlesex County College, according to his Facebook page.

Friends, family members, and his coworkers were in shock at his death. There was an outpouring on Mickens' Facebook page at their loss.

"Donta was a real good person. He will be missed," said Joe Hula, who said he was Mickens' supervisor at his job at Sears.

Mickens' sense of humor was frequently mentioned. "Even though i knew you for a little time, you had me dying at work," said Miguel A. Garcia, Jr. "I had a blast, and i am more then blessed to have met you."

His sister, Tanadjza Robinson McCray, was reeling from the loss. "(I) love you little brother. Words can't express how much I love and miss you. I wish I would've said more to you the last time we saw each other," she posted.

Memorial services for Mickens will be held on Sat., Sept. 17 from 8 to 11 am at the Agape Family Worship Center on East Hazelwood Ave. in Rahway.
