Breakdancing In Suburbia: Meet The Woodbridge Mighty Geese
"Breakdancing has done so much for my son's self-confidence," said Sewaren mom Veronica Wiscovitch. These kids are good; watch their moves!

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Breakdancing? In Woodbridge Township? You better believe it. Originally born on New York City street corners, breakdancing is moving into American suburbs — and thriving. Just ask the members of the Woodbridge Mighty Geese.
The Mighty Geese are a competitive breakdancing team and they've beaten rival crews from Manhattan and across the tri-state region. Dressed in Woodbridge's signature red, white and black, they practice at Across The Floor dance studio on Main Street. In fact, last Sunday, Feb. 4, Across the Floor hosted its first-ever breakdancing competition. And you need to see these kids dance; they are really good! Videos below.
Veronica Wiscovitch, a Sewaren mom, has two kids on the team.

"My 11-year-old son, Shane, was always really shy. My daughter, Katherina, 9, has taken all kinds of dance lessons at Across the Floor for years. When we would pick her up, he noticed these kids breakdancing and he told me, 'Mom, I want to try that,'" Veronica told Patch. "It's been incredible. He thrives on it. Now both of them are on the team."
"Breakdancing has done so much for his self-confidence. My son gets in the middle of the circle and just does his thing; he's not shy about it at all!," she marveled. "Not to mention it's an amazing athletic workout and they are burning tons of energy. They're an awesome team and I'm very proud of them all."

Her kids practice every day at Across the Floor, and when they come home, they can't stop: They turn on the music and tumble in the living room until she makes them turn it off. And, of course, every breakdancer has a street name: Katherina is Bgirl Skramblez and Shane is Bboy Dask. Her daughter's in fourth grade at Matthew Jago school and Shane is in sixth grade at Avenel Middle.

When their coach Ryan "Loose Goose" Armstrong isn't coaching them, he's pursuing his master's degree in the Hebrew bible at Princeton University. The Woodbridge Might Geese were profiled by Mr. G and the PIX 11 news team last week; watch the clip.
"It's given them this confidence and it's given them this way to express themselves that maybe they couldn't find before," Armstrong told PIX 11. "With breaking, it's a very individual style of dance. Everyone has their own moves. But it's also very communal at the same time. We get in a circle, we encourage each other."

Across The Floor owners Cheryl Corej and Sara Reynolds said they started offering breakdancing two years ago, and interest has skyrocketed.
