Come Explore Middlesex County History Day This Sunday

PISCATAWAY, NJ — History lovers of all ages are invited to the East Jersey Old Town Village in Piscataway this Sunday for a site-wide historical celebration filled with demonstrations, performances and other family-friendly activities.

Middlesex County History Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 21. Old Town Village is located inside Johnson Park at 1050 River Rd. in Piscataway. Historical craft demonstrations will include blacksmithing, open-pit cooking, chair caning, furniture making, antique clocks and more.

A professional antique appraiser will be on hand to look over your treasurers. You may bring up to two antiques to be appraised. Historical societies from throughout the County will have displays, as well.

Bring a blanket or chair and find a spot on the Village lawn to listen to old-school bluegrass music. Horse-drawn wagon rides, food trucks, 18th-century music and strolling musicians also will be part of the festivities.

At 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. a special presentation “Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis: The Legacy of Historic Preservation,” will be presented by The American Historical Theatre inside the Indian Queen Tavern.

“This is our third annual celebration of History Day, and we’re proud to continue an event that offers something for everyone,” said Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “This free, local activity is a great way for families to spend time together, experience all the Village has to offer, and see history brought to life.”

“I hope many people will attend the event, along with their friends and families. Through this hands-on approach to history, our residents can enjoy art, food, and music as they learn about Middlesex County’s lasting place in American History,” said Freeholder Kenneth Armwood, Chair of the Business Development and Education Committee.

History Day will be held rain or shine and is offered free of charge with no advance registration required. Food is available for purchase.

East Jersey Old Town Village is a gateway site to the Crossroads of the American Revolution, where 14 historic buildings were relocated and renovated, creating a village devoted to New Jersey’s rich heritage.
