Reminder: Woodbridge's First Breakdancing Competition This Sunday

Across the Floor School of Dance​ on Main Street will host Middlesex County's first-ever breakdancing competition this Sunday, Feb. 4.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Across the Floor School of Dance in Woodbridge will host the area's first-ever breakdancing competition this Sunday, Feb. 4.

This is being billed as Middlesex County's first breakdancing event and anyone is invited to sign up to compete or just show up to watch on Sunday, Feb. 4 at the dance studio on Main Street in downtown Woodbridge.

The judges are: Famed Korean B-boy Ookie (Philadelphia, PA), nationally-ranked B-girl J La-ROC (Jersey City, NJ) and the World’s Top 100 B-boy Mikey of Old Bridge, NJ.

Breakdancing, the 1980s dance phenomenon, has inspired a whole new generation. Kids who learn the art of "breaking" gain confidence to deal with personal issues and develop critical social skills. Interested participants/groups may sign up the day of the event. Prizes will be awarded to first place in multiple categories.

Did you know? Breakdancing is one of three sports added to the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It's steadily attracted interest since Across the Floor co-owner Sara Wiggins first launched it in Woodbridge two years ago.

“We currently offer hip-hop dance classes, which is very popular with the youth and relevant in today's pop culture," she said. "But before there was hip-hop dancing, there was breakdancing. Originating in the streets, breaking is more about an individual's style and expression rather than choreographed routines. It also requires a lot of strength and gymnastics ability, which we also offer classes in. We actually now have a breakdancing crew that competes, the Woodbridge Mighty Geese."

10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Registration
10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. B-Boy/B-Girl pool competition
11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Group (Crew vs. Crew) competition
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. 2x2 single-elimination dance off
