The Gateway Family YMCA Wears Black on Friday, February 23

YMCA Wears Black in Honor of Black History Month, Commitment to Equity

Starting in 2020, YMCAs across the country have committed to being anti-racist organizations in a show of solidarity by wearing black on the fourth Friday in February. In 2024, We Wear Black will take place on Friday, February 23 and The Gateway Family YMCA will once again take part in this initiative to honor Black History Month.

“We wear black to honor the struggle of those who came before us,” said Melynda A. Disla, President/CEO, The Gateway Family YMCA. “The Y is in unity with those who are working daily to fight injustice, prejudice, and inequity. To best serve our community, we must do our part to ensure those who come after us have greater opportunity to thrive.”

We Wear Black Day was created by the YMCA of the USA’s African American Resource Network (AARN) in 2020, as a response to the societal awakening to systemic racism. The goal is for all YMCAs to become anti-racist, multicultural organizations that intentionally lead and boldly model diverse and inclusive cultures that impact and strengthen our communities.

“We invite the community to join us in wearing black on February 23 and help us continue to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for all,” stated Rodger D. Koerber, EVP/COO.
