Cranford Man, 88, Dies In Wrong-Way Rt. 9 Crash In Woodbridge

Breaking: The 88-year-old who mistakenly drove north on Rt. 9 south at 9:39 a.m. Sunday, and collided head-on with another car, has died.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — UPDATE: The 88-year-old man who mistakenly drove the wrong way on Rt. 9 Sunday in Woodbridge Twp., and collided head-on with another vehicle, has died as a result of his injuries, Woodbridge police confirmed to Patch on Monday.

Thomas McHugh, 88, from Cranford was taken from the scene to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and unfortunately, has subsequently died, said Capt. Scott Kuzma of the Woodbridge police.

The fiery crash happened at 9:39 a.m. Sunday, April 8 on Rt. 9 near Metuchen Avenue in Woodbridge. The elderly man was accidentally driving north on Rt. 9 south. McHugh drove head-on into a southbound car driven by a 26-year-old man, police said.

The impact of the crash caused one of the cars to catch fire.

Both drivers were rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital by medevac helicopter. The 26-year-old man survived the crash.
