Middlesex County Democrat Announces Bid For Governor's Office

John Wisniewski, a Democratic Assemblyman from Middlesex, announced his candidacy this morning.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ— Middlesex Democratic Assemblyman John Wisniewski announced his run for Governor in an email to supporters this morning.

He's running against Phil Murphy, who has racked up a string of endorsements, and is the only other Democrat to throw their hat into the ring so far.

A video posted on Wisniewski's official campaign page emphasizes his focus on the middle class, his status as a born-and-raised New Jerseyian, and his leadership in the Bridgegate investigation.

“I’m not a Wall Street executive. I haven't made hundreds of millions of dollars by outsourcing jobs," Wisniewski says in a voice-over, seemingly attacking Murphy's history as a Goldman Sachs executive. "I've learned the value of public service. I've spent 21 years in the state Assembly fighting entrenched special interests that want to run New Jersey for themselves.”

Wisniewski has served in the General Assembly for 20 years representing the 19th Legislative District. As the head of the Transportation Committee, he lead the investigation into the Bridgegate scandal, which saw three of Chris Christie's top aides convicted on conspiracy charges.

During the 2016 election cycle, Wisniewski was the head of Bernie Sander's New Jersey campaign efforts, something alluded to in Wisniewski's video. He was the only elected official in NJ to endorse Sanders.
