As one of the leading dance companies in New Jersey, one of
its missions is to pass down the heritage of Chinese culture and art to the
next generation. The Nai-Ni Chen Dance
Company’s youth program is announcing its third annual student recital. It will be held at the Forum Theater in
Metuchen on June 15th at 2 pm.
This year the program has grown into 35 students. Nine months of hard work has come to
fruition. The concert will showcase ten Chinese
folk and classical dances choreographed by three Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company faculty
members, Nai-Ni Chen, Min Zhou and Ying Shi.
The students, aged seven to fifteen, skillfully perform the dances to a
variety of Chinese music. The dazzling
costumes, fantastic props enhance the magical presentation on stage. The
performance will include folk dances such as “Dai” and “Miao Dance” from the Yunnan
province in southwest China, the “Mongolian Chopstick Dance” from northern
China, “Tibetan Sleeve Dance” from the Himalaya Mountains in western China, and
“Umbrella Dance” and “Water Lily” from southern China near the Yangtze
River. And with martial arts influence,
the “Sword Dance”, being one of the students’ favorites will show the spirit of
the Chinese heroine Mu Lan. The advanced
students will also perform the enchanting “Raindrops”, a modern Chinese Dance
choreographed by Nai-Ni Chen. The
tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and children age 12 and
up. Children under 12 attend free. Performance location: Forum Theater, 314 Main
St, Metuchen, NJ. Date and time: June 15th
