Rumson, Red Bank Men Indicted for Beating, Robbery of Cabbie: Prosecutor

Phillip Sturner and Chris Sutphen allegedly assaulted the cabbie while trying to rob him at Church and First streets, prosecutors charge.

Rumson, NJ - Two Rumson and Red Bank men charged with assaulting and trying to rob a cab driver last summer were indicted Friday, according to the Monmouth County prosecutor’s office.

Phillip Sturner, 31, of East River Road in Rumson, and Christopher Sutphen, 20, of Riverside Avenue in Red Bank, have both been charged with second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree robbery.

The two tried to rob the cab driver at 3 a.m. on July 17, according to police, near the intersection of Church and First streets in Rumson. In the course of the theft, they inflicted bodily injury on the man, prosecutors say, identified only as A.E. in the indictment.

At the time, the cabbie required treatment for minor injuries he sustained during the assault.
