Same-Day Grocery Delivery Service Coming To 5 N.J. Counties

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Ever tried Instacart? Aiming to compete with FreshDirect, Amazon Grocery and Wal-Mart, it's yet another company that delivers grocery products to your home. They promise delivery the same day you place your order, sometimes in as little as one hour. Instacart doesn't just do grocery deliveries; they will drop off items from Wegmans, Petco, Whole Foods, Costco and CVS to your home.

Instacart announced this week they are expanding same-day grocery delivery services to Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Hunterdon and Somerset counties. On Aug. 1, Instacart will add 48 new ZIP codes in New Jersey. The company says this gives 386,000 new homes access to their on-demand delivery services.

Prices: Instacart charges $149 annually for unlimited free deliveries over $35. It's $14.99 for month-to-month membership. New customers can enter code HINYNJ20 and receive $20 off an order of $35 or more, plus free delivery on their first order (offer expires 9/4/2017).

With this big Central Jersey expansion, Instacart is also hiring 100 "shoppers," or people who select and deliver your groceries. These are not salaried positions; shoppers are paid hourly plus commission and tips, reports the Philadelphia Business Journal.

San Francisco-based Instacart first launched in the Philadelphia market in February 2014, and then expanded into South Jersey last August.
