As School Year Begins, 97 COVID Cases In Woodbridge Schools

Since Sept. 7, there have been 97 reported COVID cases so far in Woodbridge public schools. Here's the school-by-school breakdown:

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Since the Woodbridge school year began Sept. 7, there have been 97 reported positive cases of coronavirus so far in the district.

This is according to the school district's COVID-19 dashboard, which is available to the public and updated daily. The cases are spread throughout the district. However, the school that has the most positive cases is Mawbey Street Elementary School #1, which so far logged 20 positive cases in total, 17 in students and three in teachers, according to the dashboard.

No Woodbridge public school has shut down due to a positive case. The district is operating on a protocol where an infected student, teacher or staff member informs the district they tested positive, and then stays home and quarantines for a minimum of 10 days. Their classmates or colleagues are not required to quarantine.

However, a classmate or employee who is confirmed to be a close contact to a COVID-positive would have to quarantine. All close contacts of the infected person are notified by the district.

"The status of this situation is fluid, and we are monitoring it closely," said Woodbridge High School principal Glenn Lottmann in a letter home to parents last week. There are currently nine positive cases at Woodbridge High School.

Also, classrooms are cleaned and disinfected daily and the district encourages anyone to stay home when feeling sick.

As per Gov. Murphy's requirement, masks are required by anyone inside a Woodbridge public school.

Positive cases have been reported at nearly every school in the district and cases are among both students and teachers; however, students make up the majority of the cases as there more students than teachers in the district.

There were 17 cases reported district-wide on the first day of school, Sept. 7, and the largest bulk of cases, 21 in one day, were reported Monday, Sept. 13. Twelve cases were reported Monday of this week, Sept. 20.
