WOODBRIDGE, NJ - A Sunday evening garage fire on Alwat Street in Woodbridge is currently under investigation, authorities said.

The fire now appears to have been caused by someone setting off fireworks in the garage, Woodbridge Police and Woodbridge Township said Tuesday.

Members from Woodbridge Tour 1 were dispatched to Willry Street and Alwat Street Sunday night, with units reporting heavy fire from a detached garage threatening other structures to the left and right, Woodbridge Township Professional Firefighters Association said in a statement.

Crews from Woodbridge Tour 1 and Avenels B-Shift quickly hose lines and knocked down the fire, the organization said. Units from Iselin Dist. 9, Perth Amboy, Colonia and Hopelawn also assisted on the scene.

The fire is currently under investigation by the Woodbridge Fire Department and the Woodbridge Fire Prevention Bureau.

“Great work by all units limiting fire damage to the main fire building only,” the Woodbridge Township Professional Firefighters Association said.
