Woodbridge's Sept. 11 Ceremony Is This Friday, All Welcome

Woodbridge has reversed course and will not be including COVID victims in its Sept. 11 services.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — While some New Jersey towns have scaled back or even outright canceled their Sept. 11 memorial services, Woodbridge has not.

The town will honor and remember the nine Woodbridge residents who were killed that day in a ceremony scheduled for 6 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 11. The ceremony will be held on the Woodbridge town concert stage on the field behind Woodbridge High School.

The ceremony will also honor Woodbridge and all first responders. The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. and all are welcome.

The nine Woobridge residents who died in 9/11 are: Edward Allegretto, Marilyn Bautista, Patrick Dunn, John Adam Larson, James Lynch, Charles Mauro, Tonyell McDay, Narender Nath and Sankara Velamuri.

As Patch reported, in August Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac initially said the town would be reading the names of those who died from COVID "or from any other cause who did not have a proper farewell wake or funeral" this year at the town's Sept. 11 service. However, the town has since changed that and decided to do a separate event for COVID-19 victims.

"9/11 stands as an annual ceremony and we did not want to lessen the importance of either event," said Woodbridge town spokesman John Hagerty.

The ceremony to remember Woodbridge's coronavirus victims will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20 at the same place.

"(This) will be our vigil to remember those who passed from any cause during this pandemic who did not have proper funerals or wakes because of the attendance limits," said McCormac. "Then at 4:00 p.m. we will honor and thank our first responder heroes and essential workers, including doctors, nurses and hospital workers, first aiders, police officers, custodians and anyone else who went above and beyond the call of duty to help people get through COVID-19."
